Pretty for a black girl?

It's comedy to think that there are actual people who believe this is a compliment. If you thought it was, delete it out of your mind. I'm here to remind you just how prejudice this condescending phrase is. Telling an African-American woman she is "pretty for a black girl" is telling her she's a rarity within her race, meaning the majority of black women are naturally ugly. Basically saying you're shocked that I don't fit the stereotypical depiction of a black woman.......without saying it. But I can read between the lines. This is normally said to women who are have darker skin. Just offer a genuine compliment that affirms black beauty. Black women don't need any validation that we're beautiful in our own skin, HOWEVER, if you're going to compliment us do it in a way that isn't demeaning. I'm not pretty for a black girl, I'm just pretty. Melanin and all.
